Default changed timing belt will not start, 2.5

hello, I just got this 1999 ford ranger 2.5 5 speed. Previous owner attempted to change timing belt and could not get engine to fire. I reset timing marks, pulled plug on 1 set at tdc, diamond to diamond triangle to triangle, engine turns over and appears to be out of time, cranks stops cranks stops (feels like back pressure from cyl firing early. I checked coil packs and 1342 set correctly. Replaced 6 of the 8 plugs and plug wires (3 and 4 on intake side i have not gone after yet due to pain. I am no stranger under the hood and am quite confident of work performed so far is correct. Is there a timing sensor on oil pump or crank that is common problem? thank you in advance for help ... peace to all
