Default Starter Just Clicks after Engine Swap

Hello, I have just completed an engine swap and I went to turn it over and the starter just made a clicking noise.

I took the starter out and turned the key. Made some noises but the starter turned like normal.

I reinstalled the starter and it just did the clicking routine again.

I hate to think that the fly wheel could be the problem?

Or do I not have it wired up correctly?

I need help please.

Yes, if a socket is on the crankshaft pully nut I can turn the engine.

Bad ground starter housing to engine?? If you painted the starter housing you may not be grounding. I painted my starter when I did and engine swap and the car would not urn over. Cleaned the paint off where the battery cable connected to the starter and the new engine fired on the first revolution.

Did you use the same battery to bench test the starter that is in the truck. Sounds like a bad battery or a bad battery cable to me.

I looked around the starter and noticed a black and red wire from the starter with a metal hoop attached to it just hanging there. I hope that its the ground you where talking about. Because it goes to the starter. bolt that sucker to the engine and give it a whirl.

Thank you ,
Randall

So I have no clue where that black and red wire attaches to. The starter maybe? It has a black shoe on the end of it. I suppose I will have to take the starter off so that I can check to see if it attaches in the back of the starter some where? I know that it is not a ground wire. Attached to the engine block like a "ground" wire the starter didnt turn over or anything and I smelt an electrical smell. So Iam a little lost.

I have replaced the starter on rangers a few times and so I didnt pay attention to it while I was taking it off. The bumber is the "Hayes" car manual sucks donkey turds and doesnt say or show anything.

That wire should be the hot to the solenoid.

But if the starter is just clicking, I would say you have a bad ground. Either the battery to frame/engine or the starter itself

Now the starter wont work at all. Everything else electrical works the vehicle. Below is the top of starter

The unknown black and red wire tied into the starter wire harness.

another angle of the black and red wire. I dont know if its ground or hot.

that black/red or black/orange wire looks like the same wire that goes to the alternator

Take a multimeter and check for voltage. You should have B+ at the large wire all the time. You should have B+ at the small wire while trying to start the truck with the clutch depressed(for a standard). Report back!

I can't see where the black/red wire goes?

I first had the black and red wire going to the alternator. I had some arc welding happening at the battery leads any time i tried to touch them.

The black and red wire joins with the "starter wire harness."

Thanks for your help guys.

Boooooyaaaaaaahhhh people. Thats what Im talking about. The mystery red and black wire goes to the alternator.

The starter was wired up properly. The ground that was in the harness on the other side of the engine was loose.

The ground bolt was the last bolt to bust my knuckles on for that truck. Iam soooooo stocked. After that. The truck fired right up and the new engine runs like a champ. So greatful.

Thanks for everyones help.
