Default Fuel system problem???

I am no mechanic by any stretch so excuse my ignorance in advance! I have just obtained a 94 Ford Ranger. It drove fine for about 100 miles and then started acting up. I changed the plugs, wires, fuel filter, and drained and refilled the gas, but nothing helps. The truck has no power and I have to play with the gas pedal to get it to rev up any. Flooring it just stalls the truck. It seems to backfire under the hood at times? I can gently play with the pedal to occasionally get it to rev up. When it does rev, it sounds smooth. But again, if I floor it...it stalls. I can baby it, at times, on level road and get it up to about 45 mph but will not have power for hills. It can sit and idle at times for a while. My next thought was fuel pump or timing belt. Any ideas what this behavior may be before I start replacing more stuff????

It had 1/2 a tank. I filled it up to mix some good gas with it. It ran well for about 1/2 a tank and then started acting up. A drained it then and put in some fresh gas. I also used STP and Seafoam in it to try to clean everything out. It actually seemed to make it worse at times.

There's a filter on the actual fuel pump itself in the tank is what the previous poster is talking about. With the age of your truck and being old gas this could be clogged causing these problems...

Thanks. I just sprayed some penetrating oil on the 6 bolts of the bed. I am going to try to remove the bed and change the fuel pump. I am hoping that is the problem. My problem is that I just start replacing parts without being able to properly diagnose a problem. I am hoping that this is a fuel related problem.

A good place to start would be to clean your MAF, MAP, IAC and throttle body. My 8 year old truck had never had that done. It made a HUGE difference in performance! You can do all of these in a couple of hours and for under $20.

Same here! Helped my truck a ton after it got a good cleaning.

Also there is a port on the fuel injector rail where you can hook a gauge to check to see if you have good fuel pressure.

Fuel Pump Diagnostic Kit can be loaned out at your local Autozone (if you have them in your neck of the woods).

listen to those guys..^^^^^....do not pull the bed until you do the fuel pressure tests.......they take 10 minutes...there is a valve right on the fuel rail for testing.........harbor frieght sells a fuel pressure gauge for $20 or as stated you can borrow them from the stores........and as mentioned start bringing all the maintenance up

Might be crazy but there is a relay box on the driver side against the fender, shake, hit, beat on or whatever. My wife used to own a 94 when we were dating and it would do the same thing till you got out and slapped the shit out of that box.
