I tend to hit the rev limiter a lot. Is that bad?
I drive a 2006 ranger Xl 2.3 manual. Somedays when I feel like getting on it, I'll hit the rev limiter in 1st and sometimes 2nd gear. I heard that its kit that bad to do it sometimes, especially if the spark is cut, not the fuel. Does anyone know what my specific truck uses? A fuel or spark cut? And is there any difference between hitting the rev limiter in neutral and in gear? Has anyone had really bad problems out of this? Btw I hit my limiter maybe 3 times a month.

I can drive. i like doing it. It sounds cool and i know people think its dumb but I'm not looking for opinions. I just want to know technically, is it cutting fuel or spark. Because you see people hit the rev limiter for 5-10 seconds before you launch.

Typically it'll run out of steam before hitting the rev limiter thus slowing you down.
Shifting properly to keep it in the power band will make you go faster
Edit. For launch race cars use launch control. A temp rev limit to set the car at the perfect rpm for launch

Okay, I understand its bad now and i probably wont hit anymore. Well is there anything i can buy that will let me lower the rev limit to like 4500? please dont judge and tell me to buy a different vehicle. I like my ranger and i like the way it sounds hitting the rev limiter.

Put some red paint on the tach to mark 4000rpm and tell your girlfriend you'll buy her some new shoes if she ever sees you go over it. You'll learn quick!

Re: I tend to hit the rev limiter a lot. Is that bad?
From what I understand, its cutting fuel.
Yes, yes it's bad.
We have the same motor so I will say this: my motor starts to develop power about 3000 RPM. You should shift so that when you hit the next gear, the rpm drops to 3000. Rev it through that gear until you get to the rpm at which, when you up shift, your rpm will drop to 3000.
3000 is just a arbitrary number i chose where my butt dyno says "hey, we got torque now!" your truck may perform differently. Possible better with the number being 3500.
Having said all this, this is a truck engine, not a racecar. baby it unless you want to spend all your money on your truck instead of taking cute girls out.

Re: I tend to hit the rev limiter a lot. Is that bad?
Let him blow his stuff up if it sound cool
It's not neccisalry the rev limiter that will kill the motor
Typical failure from piston velocity is common. Ie broken rod. Piston
Or valve float and or breaking valve train. Like valve springs. Valves
My advice. Learn to drive and not be a tool

look up your engine's max torque rpm spec & shift accordingly - it'll be in one of the technical sections

'launch'
You're watching too much TV.
Sadly, any Ranger & 'launch' do not belong together.
