Be careful if you do this. Its a good way to crack a battery terminal.
It could be the timing belt on a 4 cylinder.
When you go to crank it, does it turn faster than normal? That's a sure sign of a busted belt.
If you have voltage at the battery and good connections, the engine will run for 1/2 hour or so on just the battery. (not well, but it'll run)
As to the crank sensor. Had mine fall off my 98 3.0 a few years back. Truck died like it had been shot! Just dead. Starter worked, engine would rotate, but it would not run. Rusted mounting screw. Then the nimrods at the shop (right across the street from where it died) busted the other one off. Had to pull the front cover to replace it, PITA!
