Default Trying to Pass Calif. Smog

Failed Calif Smog on a 1994 Ford Rager 2.3L
Failed NO(PPM), Max is 533, I got a 780 for 15mph (1823rpm) and 25mph (1804rpm) max is 786, I got 784. At the time of test I had a new air filter and changed oil and filter. Since then, I change spark spark plugs, less three for now. Spark plugs remove looked good. Still need to get to other three. I changed out the O2 sensor (only one for this model). I am looking to change out the EGR and bring it back to retest.

I am opened to suggestions. This is my first time on and struggling with this website.

Next time you go to smog, fill up your tank and go buy the highest percentage rubbing alcohol you can find and dump.the whole thing in your tank. I have gotten so many vehicles to pass like this.

Sucks to be in California with that smog test bullshit. We had that crap only if you lived a tri-counties of metro Detroit back in the early 90's, then the state determined it wasnt effective to conduct the testing anymore.

Clean out the EGR and passages to make sure they're open, this has alot to do NOX, had your HC and CO been bad I would have said the CAT was getting tired and that may be still the case but go with the EGR cleaning first...
Also you want to make sure you run the truck on the highway for a good 20mi to get the the CAT good and hot before you roll up to test...

First, is the CEL on and either way, is the CEL operable, as determined by it coming on while starting, key on, engine off and light lit? If not, gotta either fix it or assume someone removed it to mask a problem, and as such just go (correctly) all of the codes and begin the resolution.

I'm not a super pro at emission test results, but I do know that high NOx readings are frequently caused by abnormally high combustion chamber temps. So with that said, I would focus on things that make it run hotter than normal, including letting it idle in line while you're waiting for the test (quit that or rev it slightly to up the airflow and the cooling, and/or take the test early on a cool morning). Make sure the thermostat is allowing the engine to run at the correct temp. The EGR system does directly affect NOx emissions and would be a good place to think about spending some time, but if it were me I would diagnose before buying anything. And now, it goes back to that CEL, if it's working, and what code(s) are stored.

On edit: IF you've had any engine knock, I would (correctly, not like Motley Crue, spray here, super douch it there, hope for the better) disassemble to access and clean the MAF sensor. Remember, lean mixtures = hot, and most likely this is what you are trying to correct.

CowBoy, here in Calif. They check the CEL before they start the test in the "run" position ,No light no pass, CEL on when engine running ,no pass. Welcome to the Socialist Republic of California.

I know, they do that here too, well, for peeps that play along and drink the kool aid. I asked him the ? because right now, I don't know if the vehicle is new to him and he didn't disclose that or what history lurks in the ride, so I wanted to make sure he had a working CEL and that it wasn't on.

I don't live down there, but I do live in a state where testing is done based on zip code (program ends in 2020, they say "it has served it's purpose"). I also own more than one piece of real estate in this state, and in both rural and urban locations. Guess what I do and guess whose address some of my friends use to eliminate the nanny state of WA from making us waste our time playing their game every two years?

they do emissions testing here but all that is is check the gas cap for leaks and check the OBDII monitors to make sure they are ready...no smog or tailpipe probe tests

More like, it's a reminder that there's too many people crowding this planet and problems are surfacing, and when this happens they demand that .gov do something about it.

Guys... this is a tech question, not a political discussion. Let's try to keep it on track.
