Default 1984 Engine swap to a 2001 2.5 engine is it possible ? thanks for any help

Thanks in advance for youre help.

I have a 1984 Ranger with a 2.3 engine and I would like to swap the engine and tranny complete with an Engine of a 2001 Ranger.

from the 2001 I have the engine complete with a tranny and clutch to match, along with accesories.

my question is will it fit ?

and as far as the computer looks like it needs to be replaced ?

I do have all the harness for the engine and the inside onde ( that goes in the dashboard ).

Thanks for youre help.

I don't know for sure, but it should fit. Engine will at least. It's an interesting swap. Hope it works out.

The ECU on the newer motor reads most of it's speed/abs/related info from the differential. I don't know if the older trucks did that. Can you get the rear end off the 2001? You would need the computer from the 2001 as well.

I,m pretty sure the mounting holes are different, are they not? Most of the harness under the dash and engine bay would have to be used. You would have to also have to use the fuel tank or at least a high pressure pump for the FI.you would need to use the 2.5 exhaust or at least fab up O2 bungs or use a 93-94 tube header that has both the EGR and the O2 bungs.I don't think you would need the rear as the ABS is a separate system and the VSS is in the tranny and the system uses that..You might have to use the instrument cluster also as the harness uses that.

VSS reads from the rear differential on the 2.5L trucks, unless you know something that nobody else does.

Is it a manual or automatic? (Your truck and the new one.)

Iv done it a few times now however youll have to move the carrier bearing to adjust for the diffrence , I hope that you still have both drive lines off each truck

thanks for the input.

I do have the engine mounts from the 2001 and will install or adapt if needed, I also have the fuel pump from the 2001 and could install if needed, I dont have the exhaust from the 01. The rear from the 01 is gone too. I dont have the 01 instrument cluster.

----------

I dont have the 01 drive line, the 84 still running. thats for letting me know, i will look for the carrier bearing of an 01. as far as the lenght. Do I need to replace it ? thats what I'm getting from you're message or is just the bearing and that will be it ?

thanks again

The 84 its an automatic

----------

I do have the computer from the 2001, along with the engine and dash wiring harness as well. if needed.
