Try turning the key on, then counting to 5 before starting it. It may just not be up to full pressure the first time you start it.
Another idea, though I'm not sure if it will apply to your vehicle, some cars are equipped with an oil pressure kill switch, which will turn off the ignition if you lose oil pressure. Could be that the oil pressure when you first crank it is too low, so it dies, then on the second try, the oil is in the lines already, so it stays running?
