Default Ranger IDLING AT 45 MPH....HELP ?

NEWBIE POST.......HELP
I have a 97 ranger that will idle like its at full throttle. It doesnt do it all of the time, but it has been doing it alot lately. If you push the clutch in and put it in nuetral while driving the rpm will rev WAY UP like its at full throttle. Lubed the cable and mech on top of throttle body, cleaned the IAC valve with carb cleaner. The pedal, cable and mech operates smoothly. wondering if there was an EASY WAY to test the IAC valve ?Any suggestions would be great. I dont have much money to work with and it is my only vehicle as of right now. I have read other people replacing alot of things and still having the problem and I cant really afford to buy a bunch of new parts that dont do anything.

Thanks in advance
Shawn

Unplug the IAC and see what happens. Never tried it but if it drops down from screaming, you have your culprit I think.

Do a vacuum test or spray carb clean at the base of the intake and the hoses.

I will try unplugging the IAC when it surges again, see what happens. Maybe I can just replace that.

I am not quite sure how to do a vacuum test and what does spraying carb clean at the base of the intake and the hoses DO ? What am i looking for there ?

I had same problem and spent alot of money on the wrong parts. It is the IAC, just replace it. Problem will be solved.

A vacuum test will find if you have any vacuum leaks, but you need a vacuum pump.
Or if you spray carb clean around the hoses going to the intake and the base of the intake and it revs up you have a vacuum leak. But if you had an intake leak large enough where your idle is way way to high you should notice it right away.

And are all the hoses going to the intake pluged in. the brake booster like came off on my grand prix and it idled at like 4000 rpm and i could not stop. Scary moment.

Ok, i unplugged the IAC when it was idling higher than normal(about half throttle on its own). It did nothing. Idle stayed the same. I also noticed one time it happened that the idle stuck high(about half throttle) and then began to climb own its own until it was racing at full throttle. Havent had time to get back into it yet, Im going to try the carb clean spray test when i get a chance. Sound like it may be something other than the IAC since it is climbing on its own ? I Dunno....? LOL
