Default What do I need to know about '89 Ranger 4cyl. 4wd?

I put this in the 4cyl section but also wanted to post it here because this section may get more traffic.

I did a search on this and didn't come up with much. This truck has been in the family since new. for the last 12-15 years it has pretty much just sat. It was driven maybe once every couple of years. It is a regular cab 4wd, 4cyl, 5 speed.

It shows 125,000 miles it looks ragged as hell but seems to run good. Unless the battery was dead it has always started right up and hasn't been a problem and has ran great.

I've got a job that is a two hour commute that will last about a year or so. I am planning to start driving this 4 days a week to keep the mileage down on my other vehicle (07 Ram 4x4 with Hemi) and possibly save a few dollars in gas.

3 years ago I replaced a fuel pump on it. I am currently in the process of doing a tune up, replacing fuel filler hose, replacing broken hood latch, replacing worn out mirrors, a seat cover and a new headliner, oil change and looking into having an oil leak fixed which I believe will be a rear main. All of this will probably cost 5x's what the truck is worth and there goes all the money I saved on gas.

From what Ive been told, prior to the fuel pump, the truck has never broken down before and other than an oil change once in awhile has never had any maintenance of any type.

This truck is going to go from not being used at all to being driven 75mph(if it'll go that fast) daily.

My question is, are there any common ailments I need to be keeping an eye on?

Thank you.

Is the timing chain a major repair on this model?

I tried to look it up and all I found were later models where the chain is at the rear of the engine and the cost of replacing could be as much as $2500.00.
