Default 2.5 doesn't want to start when cold

My 2.5 Ranger was having problems starting this winter. I changed the fuel filter and ended up having to change the battery from the drain of trying to start the truck. After sitting for several hours it would turn over but seemed like it wasn't getting fuel. I would cycle the key several times and it would eventually start. Once I got it started in the morning it would start right up as long as I didn't wait 12 hours or so inbetween starts.Since the temperature has warmed up here lately the truck has started right away. I was planning on changing the fuel pump but I thought I would get some thoughts before chasing a problem with new parts. It just seems odd that temperature would have an effect on a faulty fuel pump.
thanks in advance.

I would say 30 degrees and colder. It has been in the 40s and 50s lately but first thing in the morning it is still 30s and lately it has been fine. Started first time the last few weeks. I am glad it starts but i would rather fix it when it is still nice out than wait til this winter and have to fix it when it is frickin freezing out.

You should try jumping your truck, if it starts then you could conclude your battery doesn't have enough juice. But have you checked your fuel pressure regulator?

No I haven't I just looked it up and figured out how to do it and where it is. I will get a fuel pressure tester and check the regulator now that I know how and it isn't frickin freezing. thanks

Actually that will only tell you that there is low pressure. To figure if the regulator is bad, pull the vacuum line off the regulator and if there is fuel in it then it is bad

It is winter again and my old problem reared its ugly head. I replaced the intake coil pack today thinking that that could be it but no better. The battery was bought last march. I replaced the plug wires and plugs 2 years ago. The fuel pressure on the rail is 61 when you turn the key on and 63 when you eventually get it started and it does not jump around or waiver so I don't feel that I have a fuel pressure problem. Any ideas?
thanks, Sean

Just cleaned the MAF and IAC. I don't know if it helped since the truck has been started today. Will have to wait for the morning. or later tonight.

Have you had any problems with your temperature gauge? If for some reason it's telling the comp. that its warmer out than it really is, it will starve the engine, making it to where you have to turn it over for a minute letting the cylinders fill with gas. I have the opposite problem where my temp gauge says its colder than it is, so I have to hold the throttle open to even out the air/fuel ratio during start up. One way to check the theory would be to spray some starting fluid in the intake before trying to start it up.

It is buried below cold until it runs for about 10 minutes when it is cold out. Afterwards it runs where it always does somewhere in the middle.

I noticed something since hooking up the fuel pressure tester. If you activate the shrader valve with the key on relieving fuel pressure, the truck generally starts up on the next turn of the key.
