Default Problem cranking...2004 2.3L Automatic

Okay so I have a 2004 Ford Ranger with the 2.3L 16 valve 4 cylinder and an automatic transmission. I have a re occuring problem when cranking the truck. When I turn the key it spins like it wants to crank but it never "catches" and fires. I can depress the accelerator a little and pump it as if it were not fuel injected and it will normally fire but it idles rough or really high for the first 15-30 seconds then performs like a dream. A few times when it finally cranks it smokes like it was loaded up with too much fuel. Has a new battery, spark plugs and wires, fuel pump relay, and fuel filter. I also tested the alternator and it is working properly. Any common problems with these engines or any suggestions? It doesn't do it every time or even every other time; MAYBE once every two or three days. I'm not a mechanic by any means but I do have some what common sense about vehicles. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
