ABS light/CEL - no speedometer
There are many threads on this topic. I had this happen back in September:
http://www.fordrangerforum.com/elect...eedometer.html
I got the wiring harness and sensor replaced that are above the rear differential. It was ok until December (3 months) then it cut out for just a day. Now comes this past week (February), and the speedometer is constantly not working, the ABS light comes and goes, and the CEL often times goes on. The CEL even went off the other day but came back. When I pulled into the shop, the speedometer was working but CEL was on. They said they want to see it when the speedometer is dead. It happens randomly. It was jumping all around today and dying, then it worked fine for this latter part of the day.
When the speedometer is working fine then it dies, it seems ABS or something kicks on for less than a second since I keep the same amount of throttle. I feel a small jolt like someone hit the brakes or the engine cut for a quarter second.
Had it checked today, they said the front ABS is showing the reason for the code. They said that is odd and it's probably a faulty sensor somewhere else. They'll look more at it tomorrow. Ideas?
169k miles.

Re: ABS light/CEL - no speedometer
Where is that located?
Not sure if it's just me but when I get the ABS and CEL, it seems harder to shift. It's a manual transmission too.

Re: ABS light/CEL - no speedometer
could also be on the top of the rear differential. if your abs light is on, then thats what it is

Re: ABS light/CEL - no speedometer
how can the shop say that it's the front ABS causing the code? the truck doesn't have front ABS, does it?

Re: ABS light/CEL - no speedometer
I went back today, they said it could be the ABS module for the whole vehicle (or something like that). Since yesterday, I drove about 200 miles and the speedometer flicked around a bit, but worked fine for the most part. No ABS light or CEL.
They also said they already replaced the VSS.
They want me to come back with a dead speedometer and a CEL.

My speedo would do the same thing and I had no cel or abs light on. Ended up being the speedo motor in the gauge cluster.

Re: ABS light/CEL - no speedometer
I doubt it's that since I've been getting constant CEL and ABS lights, except today, when it was fine for the most part but still jumped around a little. Didn't give a light though.

Change the sensor in the differential again. That is your problem. 10 minutes and $25. Clean the area well before installing and make sure your diff is full of gear oil.

Re: ABS light/CEL - no speedometer
It was just changed, why would it cause problems so soon?
Should I buy a Motorcraft part or will a generic from Advanced Auto Parts, Autozone, etc. do ok?
Anyone have the Motorcraft part number?

if it was broken and then they replaced the sensor and it worked fine for 3 months and broke again........then 99% chance it is the sensor again......I would chekc the wire harness...especially if they replaced it...they had to splice wires to do that.....I use motorcraft parts when it is life or death for the truck ie, cam syncro or when it is a labor intensive repair.......if you can do this yourself it is literally 1 10mm bolt and the wire conection.......15 minutes tops......clean the area off well and put oil on the o-ring.....make sure your gear oil is up to the fill plug.....

I am confused.......I just read your old thread and you said they replaced the sensor in august and it made no difference....
I think what happened is when they replaced the right e-brake you need to pull a bracket off the top of the differential........I bet they trashed the wiring on the sensor when they did that.......I also supect that the hanress reapir they did might be your culprit.....
as a fair warning...I have not been on this site for a few weeks now........I got tired of members not giving clear concise details and not answering questions.......I reserve the right to unsubscribe at any moment......

I feel the same way.
I trashed the harness on mine and it did the same thing then just quit. Rewired it now its fine.

Re: ABS light/CEL - no speedometer
Here is the thread from September:
http://www.fordrangerforum.com/elect...eedometer.html
I never updated that thread with the solution, which was replacing the wiring harness after all that e-brake work was done. Then I had no issues until December. In December, I had issues for a day, then they went away until just recently.
Here's a timeline of some relevant work that was done:
Early-Septmer: Sensor was changed and it made no difference
Mid-September: Solution was the wiring harness
October 15th: I had differential fluid changed,
October 30th: had a new rear drum put on since I was still having e-brake issues
November 15th: had new shoes put on rear and it solved my e-brake and braking issues
I experienced the issue in December for one day, which was almost a month after I had any work done that could have broken the wiring harness. Then no issues until February.
