Smile 2.3L, Fuel mileage changes, 1 mod did it.

Hello,

I have been wanting to get better mileage on my 2011 Ranger 2.3L, 5-spd, 2-wheel drive since the beginning. This truck has the 4:10 gears. I never got better than 23.2 mpg highway and 20.5 mpg city on average. So, I thought of many modifications I could do and read lots of threads on it here over the last 12 months.

Here's what I did last week: I cut off the factory muffler and installed a muffler that I purchased at the farm supply store here in northern Minnesota, the kind that just sit on the top of a tractor exhaust manifold like a old John Deere or Massey-F or Ford etc. The inside is basically a straight 1 1/2 inch pipe with some serrations on it to disturb or baffle the sound. Like the inside of a 70's era Thrust muffler.

It doesn't sound that loud during acceleration or at running speed, I think its a good sound for this little truck. doesn't look fancy at all up under the chassis. The body of it is 16 inches long by about 8 inches diameter with 2 inch inlet and outlet piping.

Well, on two separate runs now, one of 254 miles and the other of 360 miles with 95% highway........ it got 27.5 mpg both times. I filled it to the top at my local pump and returned to the same pump to top it off again on my returns. I'm sure I'm within a pint of fuel for accuracy of my calculations.

I am amazed at the difference and quite happy with the increase. The truck performs the same on the road for me, I travel these highways often so I feel quite sure its for real.

In my mind, the airflow through the motor has increased and the fueling has not increased along with the other sensed changes i.e. the MAF, Fuel Map and Oxy sensor to name a few. I had considered moving the MAF sensor to another position in the air intake tract from where it is now, just after the airbox.

Ponder this and comment please. What do the fueling experts think is happening besides what I have said. Thanks

it sounds a little to good to be true but "they" have been able to keep the Scudari engine buried for 10 years now. So who knows?

Well,

It is true and I did it again yesterday. I'm amazed as well but quite happy with the results. Clearly, its running leaner than before.

3 mpg improvement by changing the muffler???? What is the purpose of posting absolute nonsense? Think if I replaced the mufflers on my 12 Mustang with tractor mufflers I could gain 3 mpg......not!
The other guys who know what they are talking about will hammer you on this crap.

Someone needs to tell Ford Motor Company about this mod.

I'll give Ford a ring and ask them about my Scuderi engine too

Question Re: 2.3L, Fuel mileage changes, 1 mod did it.

Well, I'm sorry for telling the truth but those are the facts. I am getting a full 4.3 mpg better with this silly muffler mod than before it. I pulled the plugs yesterday and they had been chocolate brown on the insulators and now they are lite tan looking. What to say? I'm 53 years old, know my mechanicalss reasonably well and this is what has happened with this mod.

The idea here is less back pressure. The engine can exhale better now. Which on long steady drives will help fuel mileage.

Just like if a potato is shoved in the tailpipe, the truck would run like shit and die. To much back pressure.

The op should post the actual part # and brand of Muffler for anyone that wants to try it.

So if I put a semi muffler on my truck with 6" pipes, because the engine is breathing better, I'll get better fuel economy? That is just too funny for words.

I'll get some pictures of the muffler with the part # / manufacturer for you. Also, some pics of it on my truck to see how I installed it.

I am taking no offense to any postings that question the results or even call it laughable............ what I saying is this is what has happened on my 2011 2.3L 4 cyl. 5-spd. 2-wheel drive truck and even I can't explain it. Maybe I'll do a sound file to for you.

Thanks, Jeff

Maybe there was something wrong with your original muffler. That could explain why you are now getting the fuel mileage you should be. Just a guess...
