Default Timing belt?

I just bought a 1995 ford ranger 4 cyl. The guy i bought it from says that the timing belt snapped when he stepped off the clutch too fast he said he got it replaced and ever since then it has been hesitating. Is it possible that the person that installed the timing belt did it incorrectly? Would that cause the engine to hesitate? And if so how can i correct that?

Well if it was installed incorrectly then it should produce a CEL (Check Engine Light), even if it does not the 1995 has system of factory codes that are checked with a plugin reader. It checks for codes and then blinks the lights in a particular fashion and it will indicate any problems stored in the computer.

Generally you can check with AutoZone or even O'Reilly's to have them read for free or low cost. You can even take it to a shop.

And if the timing belt is off by a tooth or more it could be your problem. The bigger issue would be the valve train when the belt 'snapped'. Because you have the pistons now rotating at different intervals and the valves would have hit the the top of the pistons... may have either bent the valves or damaged the top of the pistons... a compression check on all the cylinders would help with that...

The 2.3 lima is a non interferance engine. If the belt breaks the valves wont hit the pistons. If the belt is off by more the one tooth the engine will bog down and hesitate.

Mark (20Ranger06), where did you get the info that the 2.3L is an interference engine?

You know whats weird? I got a Dayco timing belt when I replaced mine a while back. I have a Mazda B2300 and under the detailed installation instructions it stated the the FORD 2.3 is NOT an interferance motor. But that my 94 Mazda B2300 IS in fact an interferance motor that will cause damage to the pistons and/or valves if the timing belt breaks. I just bought a Ford Ranger 1993 through 1996 (Haynes) repair manual and it is for the same years Mazda B2300 trucks. Who/Which is right?

Agreed, I also believe it's non-interference. . My apologies for derailing the thread.

Christian (OP), I recommend you buy a repair manual for your vehicle. The repair information can also be found at libraries or online, but (in my opinion) nothing beats the convenience of having your own manual to study and reference. $20 well spent.

I also recommend purchasing a code scanner, but I'll leave specific scanner suggestions for others to elaborate on.

Your truck should have some inspection holes in the timing belt cover so that you can inspect and verify the alignment with the timing marks. Given your circumstances, I do recommend you verify your timing belt alignment before anything else. It's free and fairly easy to to.

You can get a good idea of what you're getting into by searching YouTube (timing belt, ranger).

4banger, your Mazda 2300 is non interference as well as the 2.3 in the rangers.

The op's 1995 should be obd-2.

The op should check the marks in the 3 pulleys. He also should check for something that did not get connected.

Keep checking for codes.
