Default transmission wont engage

On my way to work this morning I was cruising at about 70mph then all of a sudden i felt a quick slip so i threw it in neutral and tried to put the trans back into gear well it wouldn't go so i pulled over and let the trans wind down and tried again nothing happened it would go into gear and not move it also shifts with out the clutch engaged i have no gears not even reverse i am very confused as it happened suddenly with no loud noise or thump i just notice the rpms suddenly rise and i instantly threw it out of gear and stopped i did have my cruise control activated at the time as well i don't know if that matters or not I have been told it is the clutch, slave cylinder, clutch fork, throwout bearing or input shaft now that being said before this happened i started to notice a whining noise in my trans about 2 weeks ago and since i was in between paychecks i put it off any help would be awesome the truck is a 93 ford ranger (obviously) 2wd XLT with a 2.3 4cyl 5speed trans you can email me as well at chado.johnson@gmail.com

My bet says all the oil left the trans, and the input bearing locked up and twisted the shaft off. Pull the drain plug and see how much oil comes out.

looks like either way you'll be pulling the tranny....
either a bad pressure plate/ stuck with slave bearing or bent...or like tomboy said...the input shaft is twisted..

Sounds like a new clutch is in order. I had something similar happen to a 69 VW I had. I was sitting at stop light when clutch pedal when to floor. Had to replace it plus throwout bearing etc. Also check the fluid level in the hydraulic clutch reservoir. If the actuator slipped off of inside the bell housing the plunger will have gone past its travel and most of the fluid will have been lost...
