Default Why an electric fan & clutch fan

I have an 08 2.3L Ranger and I'm trying to figure out why there is both an electric fan and a clutch fan. I'm sure there is a good reason but it just seems odd to have both. Obviously if you could remove the clutch driven fan you would see some improvement in mileage and get up and go. Being that it's a 2.3L engine it may be like doubling RWHP. I had a Fusion with a 2.3L engine and I don't recall there being both.

My 2009 has the same dual fan arrangement. The electric fan appears to be wired to operate with the AC compressor so it must give a cooling boost to the condensor. I guess the engineers found that the mechanical fan alone wasn't enough. It's an added expense so you can be sure it is needed or it wouldn't be in there.

After some reading in the Ranger factory repair books I see that you are correct.

The clutch fan is mainly designed to cool the radiator and oil coolers. The electric fan is like you guys said for the AC. Don't remove the clutch fan though cause the electric fan won't be enough to cool the engine

I wonder if you could replace the electric fan with a high out put one & then remove the clutch fan??

I've never seen that set up, but I'd say leave it as-is.
