Default 2004 Ford Ranger Faulty Temperature Sensor?

Hey Guys,

I have been going through the threads for a few days now trying to find something on my particular situation to no avail. Hope you can help and I apologize in advance if I overlooked any threads that pertain to this issue.

I have a 2004 2.3l XL. A Few months ago I went on a camping trip and my temperature gauge shot up all the way and stayed there for about a minute until I could find a safe place to pull over. All my fluids were at the proper levels, and I couldn't find anything else wrong with the engine. Got back on the road and about 10 miles later it went off again. I was going about 65mph through the mountains both times. It hasn't gone off since until this past week. Now anytime I reach 65-70 my temperature gauge shoots up for about 30-45 seconds and falls back to the middle.

I have a new OE thermostat (figured I'm at 110k might as well replace it before it goes out.) I'm being told by a few friends that it sounds more like an electrical issue rather than a mechanical issue. (Not very "learned" on the electrical side of rangers.)

Anyone have any experience with this type of issue and can offer some advice? Unfortunately I don't have an excess of money right now to start replacing parts that don't need to be. (Just rear ended someone on the freeway so money is going to pay for traffic school, on the plus side I now know my ranger doesn't stop on a dime more like 3,000 dimes)

Sorry to write a novel, I've noticed most people on here with problems usually don't provide enough info.

Thank Guys,
