I believe the part you are referring to is the cam position sensor. It's behind the timing belt cover, behind the oil pump pulley. I found a pair of wires running to it near the power steering pump on the left side of the engine block, (the right side, looking at it from the front). I'm not about to tear down the whole front of my engine just hoping it's bad. I already went through that replacing my crankshaft position sensor, for which I had to remove the alternator, serpentine belt and drain my coolant and remove water pump feeder hoses and tube just to get to it. The sensor is just a magnetic pickup, nothing really to break or burn out. The cam position sensor is a similar sensor and would be even MORE of a pain to get to, with even more things having to be removed.
From what I've been told, the ICM is on the firewall. It's where the big wiring loom connects to the firewall. When the center bolt is removed, it pulls apart like a big rectangular wiring connector.
Am I right?

This is a follow-up to my original posts in this thread almost a year ago...
Basically, I got tired of tinkering with my Ranger and bought another vehicle, just to get to work and keep my job.
I recently checked the timing belt by pulling the top of the plastic cover towards the radiator and checked the belt tension.
WHADDYA KNOW, the timing belt had snapped cleanly.
That gave me the incentive to fix the truck. It wasn't much fun, pulling off pretty much everything on the front of the engine just to get the new belt in place. The crank pulley was no picnic either, but I got it on, all the timing marks lined-up and I put it back together.
Now, IT WON'T START!!!
I have fuel pressure at the schrader valve, the engine cranks just fine.
However, when I clamp an inductive timing light over the spark plug cable to cylinder 1, I get no flash from the timing light. Apparently no spark.
Any suggestions?

While poking around the engine compartment, looking for disconnected or broken wires, I discovered a broken sensor on the same cabling as my crank position sensor. While the crank position sensor would be a likely culprit for my no start/no spark condition, THAT connector was solidly connected.
The connector body on the coolant temperature sensor was completely broken-off from the sensor, which was still screwed into the engine.
My question is - could this have anything to do with the no start situation I'm experiencing, or is it just a minor part that needs to be replaced?

i just bought a used 2.5 for my 98 put it in and it started right up. started driving it down the road and it did the exact same thing yours did. The timing belt is not broke and i got good compression so i didn't think that out if time. I was planing on changing the crank sensor in the next day or two. i changed the camshaft sensor with the one off my old engine which ran. still nothing.

Hey DOC174 did you ever find the problem i am at the same place, same symptoms, Im about to change cam pos. sensor. everything else is done if your still around id love to hear YOUR reply.
