OP: I believe that what you circled is what Ford redesigned the temp system to. In essence, there's a valve near the air box to help warm your motor up when it's cold. On my '92, the air box was on the passenger side of the engine bay; the temp valve is located under the air box, so that when the engine is cold, the valve is closed. Once the engine warms up, the valve opens to let cooler air in.

On this design, it might work opposite to mine, as in, when the engine is cold, the valve is open to let warmer air in, and when the air is warmed up, the valve closes to maintain a more uniform engine temprature for emissions purposes.

Air Intake Resonator, if you look closely at it, you will find it's sealed to outside air.
Zekew64; Thermistatic air cleaners like you described and have went out of vogue back in mid-90's.

Ford never put anything like that on a Ranger.

Yes they did, through the early 90's, when cold it had valve the closed off outside air and drew hot air off the passenger side or only exhaust manifold.

You might go to www.fordparts.com enter your vin number and search all their engine parts diagrams ... Find the part your seeking and the part number after that eBay or Google, rockauto.com it to find the best price...What engine do you have?
