water pump
hey all, i'm getting ready to install a water pump, and the new one only came with an o-ring. i have a suspicion that the o-ring might not be enough and ill need some kind of paste to put in there. the people at the parts store said the o-ring will be enough. it was a hell of a lot of work to get to this point, and i don't want to risk a leak. anyone have any suggestions?
thanks

Re: water pump
Not sure what your asking here. Yes the fresh new Oring supplied with the pump should do the job. Smearing it with a little bit of water proof grease would not hurt but Im sure there are plenty of people/mechanics that dont do it. You DO need a gasket to seal where the water pump connects to the block. Your parts store should have paper...cork...or some high tech rubber/plastic or fiber ones. I use Permatex gasket maker. You can get it a Wal Mart (or an auto parts store but it will be more expensive) Ultra Blue Permatex Gasket maker comes to mind. But read the packages and depending on your job it will tell you which formula will be best for your repair. Use it just like it says. I have NEVER EVER had a failure from using the correct formula in the correct way on any repair I have ever done using the gasket maker in lew of a gasket. Make sure both surfaces you are prepping are CLEAN and DRY. Good luck with your repair

On your 98 2.5 I think you just have the o-ring. The older 2.3's have the "cork" gasket.

The o-ring is fine. Just make sure you have a good, clean surface for it to seal against before you install it. A lot of crap builds up back there over time.

Re: water pump
FYI: some say that it helps to put blobs of vaseline on the oring to make it stick while installing - so it doesn't fall out of place... i think i had to do something similar when i replaced my thermostat housing oring...

Yeah what this guy is saying. Anytime I'm installing something with a gasket I usually use a few small spots of gasket maker to hold the gasket to the part so I don't have to worry about it sliding or wrinkling up.

Re: water pump
Use some automotive sandpaper on the opposite surface to make sure you get the gasket against a smooth surface. Be sure to use the gasket grease too.
