Default Good timing belt and tensioner?

Can someone post a link to a good timing belt and tensioner? I was told $350 if the shop does it and supplies their own goods. I can save some money if I supply the stuff, since they charge $60 for a timing belt, when I see them going for $30, etc. Does it need a belt tensioner spring too? Or the dealer will do the timing belt alone for $300.

Is this ok?

What about springs?

Is changing the oil or taking the oil filter off a requirement when getting a new timing belt? I think the dealer said it is.

BTW, how many hours of labor would a shop likely charge to replace the spark plugs? How many hours of labor would they likely charge to replace the spark plug wires?

A good shop will take at the most 2 hours to do the plugs and wires but if I were you I would do it myself because it's not hard to do and alot cheaper. The hardest part is removing the upper intake.

I changed the Plugs AND Wires WITHOUT removing the upper intake, though it would have been easier had i done such.

Never heard of a Oil & Filter change being part of a Timing Belt replacement.

I don't know from a "good timing belt and tensioner" to a "bad" one as far as Parts go.
Check www.RockAuto.com /parts catalog

YES, you'll want to replace the Tensioner and most times such can be in a kit like you have pictured.
there are also (probably) at least 2 Idlers that NEVER seem to be included in ANY kit, so go figure.
NAPA and Carquest parts seem to be a bit priced higher than the usual group of auto parts companies.

CHEERS!!

It is stupid to replace a timing belt without changing the tensioner.

Thanks.

I would not bring it to a dealer.......find a local shop and you will get a better price.......I might consider changing the waterpump depending on how much more they charge you....

I have changed my plugs and wires twice......the second time I did it in less than an hour......use Autolite plugs and wires with the hooks......I agree I bet a shop would figure it as 2 hours.......I did not remove the intake.......it is really just the back 2 plugs that are a pain.....and it looks much worse then it is....

The dealer wanted $250 more for the water pump. The shop said they can get to the water pump without messing with the timing belt, so they said I shouldn't bother now.

YIKES.......but to do the TB you need to remove the fan.....all that is left to change the WP is 3 bolts......maybe 10 minutes.......you should not bother going to a dealer for something as simple as a TB.....find a good local guy.....then when you need something else ...you will not get hosed.......

I didn't get it changed yet, I'm just trying to figure out their thought process, which is the same as you stated.

You wanted are advise but you don't give us specific details.. it is impossible to help you without details... you never mentioned a local Guy? How much did the local guy want to do the job? Be very specific?... You mentioned the dealer wanted an extra $250 for the WP. Did that include the actual Motor craft WP, or was if just labor?

Have you owned the truck since new? Do you know if it has the original WP? Thermostat? Radiator hoses?

I mentioned it in my first post. I used the word "shop" instead of "local shop". To clarify:
1. Ford Dealer - $300 to do just the timing belt. Add $250 to that ($550 total) to do timing belt and water pump. OEM parts
2. Local shop - $350 to do timing belt and tensioner if they supply the parts. Brand unknown. This same "local shop" said it's not necessary for me to do the WP since they can get to it easily if it breaks. If I supply the parts from a brand of my choosing, then they will charge an hourly labor rate. I didn't ask what that would be. I'd assume around $250 to $300 if I supply everything, including the water pump.

Sorry, I missed that, it looked like part of your sig. My family has owned it since new. It's mine now. It has the original WP and radiator hoses. Thermostat I *believe* was changed around 90k miles or so. However, I remember the heat dying on me one winter, but that could have been the O2 sensors which were changed instead of the thermostat.

I have 168k miles now.
