Runs good at iddle but kills when i hit the gas pedal
Hi i have a 1997 ford ranger with de 2.3L engine. when i start the car it runs good at iddle but when i hit the gas pedal the engine rpm won't go over 4000 and then, if i keep the gas pedal at it's maximum the rpm will slow down untill the engine stops. except when it's cold it will go over 4000 rpm. so here's what i've done so far :
- I checked if the fuel pump ad enough pressure and it had enough.
- i unplugged the MAF sensor and instead of running well like it's suppose to if the problem is the MAF sensor, the engine stops...
Could someone help me with this problem ?
Thanks !

what was your fuel pressures?... KOEO, KOER, KOER with vacuum line removed from the FPR........did it drop more then 10 psi in 5 minutes after you turned it off?.......

Re: Runs good at iddle but kills when i hit the gas pedal
I think in 1997 they did away with the vacuum operated fuel pressure regulator. From 97 onward, it should be 65 PSI at all times, and shouldn't float more than 5 in either direction.

I am pretty sure the change happened in 1998....He should have koeo 40, koer 30 koer w/FPR disconnected 40

OK. Get a code reader and check for codes frequently. Try and catch a pending code.

Re: Runs good at iddle but kills when i hit the gas pedal
If you can, run a compression check. Hopefully you get decent numbers and can eliminate those issues of timing, head gasket, valves, and rings. - warm engine up a little if possible before beginning
- pull all 4 plugs
- insert gauge into each cylinder for testing
- crank over 7-8 times and observe how quickly compression builds up on gauge.
- it should build pressure to max within 3-4 revolutions
- compression should be within 10-15 PSI across cylinders
- if any cylinders are low, repeat the test to see if it's rings or other
- ... by putting a squirt of oil in the cylinder just prior to checking
Let us know how it goes and good luck!

Maybe clogged cat. Pull 02 sensor out and see if you gain power. Maybe cam sensor is going bad, you would need to look at injector duty cycle on scan tool when the loss of power happens to see if it flat.lines.

I had the same problem today. My truck idled fine but when I tried to drive it would die.I ran my scanner and had no codes. Then I check the live data and it showed the cpu in open loop at 180 degrees and the mass air voltage did'nt change when I hit the throttle.I opened the hood and saw that that air intake hose was loose so I reclamped it everything was working after that.
A bad mass air flow sensor can read enough air flow to let the engine idle fine but when you start to drive it cant adjust for the increased air flow.
These sensor will not always throw a cel if the malfunction.

Re: Runs good at iddle but kills when i hit the gas pedal
When I first purchased my truck, it ran extremely rough and had the same symptoms. turned out the previous owner who not only let the truck sit for 5-6 years but removed the air filter all together. truck was getting too much air, and stalled immediately under throttle.

Ok I have same problem I just got fuel filter not on yet! Snowing here.. and I seen that the cat could be in bad shape. Can I run without a cat? Will there enough back pressure? Am talking like straight pipe all the way

ummmm, let see. Hitting the gas till 4k, then holding it there until the motor dies. Your probably seizing up your bearings! lolz
