I'll follow up as soon as soon as I'm done testing!

This can be narrowed down dramatically with a $5 multimeter and some concentrated brainpower.

If you don't want to do that then replace the following. Starter, ignition switch, cpp/nss switch, fender relay, cable from battery to starter, electronic relay, grounds . And a few others I am forgetting....it will start.

Really? OK please tell me if he has B+ at the starter cable?

What does he have for V.@ + side of starter solenoid?

Also have you located the click is it coming from near the battery or the starter? I'm thinking now, that if you solenoid is plunging the bendix gear out to engage the flywheel, then you might have a starter motor problem.... Try jumping the Solenoid first to see... Some use a long screwdriver to close circuit. You can essentially test both by jumping.

basically what i was guessing but figured a solenoid would be cheaper just in case

we know he has power we just have to figure out where it is stopping at thus the screwdriver jumping
the point is you can very closely narrow down the problem within one or two parts with something just about everybody should have granted a voltmeter is very nice to have around for this kind of thing just not everybody has one

The idea is not to guess. If is either the starter and or cable or it is something in the "starter control circuit" if you have B+ at the starter cable and B+ at the + side of the starter solenoid then it is the starter.

either way it is a guess it just depends on what you check first

He could have a bad cable going to the starter. Test the cable at the starter with a $5 multimeter.

It is not a guess. If he does not have B+ at the starter solenoid then you work your way backwards. When you have B+ you found the issue.

The bigger wire at the starter that comes from the battery should have 12+ V. All the time. The positive side of the starter solenoid should have 12+V. When the key is turned to start and the clutch is depressed.(if it is a 5 speed)

Re: 94 4 Cyl Ford Ranger Won't Start / Turn Over - Help Appreciated!
OK, guys, here is the deal.
Click was coming from the solenoid (near the battery.)
We could not jump it to start the truck.
My friend jumped the solenoid on the starter which started it!
However, we could not duplicate that again and the next time he was gently tapping on the starter (and it started!)
So, now that i know I have to replace the starter, is there anything else I should do at the same time? Perhaps some kind of cable or contact?
I want to make sure it is fixed when I get the parts...
Anything else I should be looking at? It still "pop-starts" but it seems to be running more roughly...I imagine constant pop-starting damages some components...
Thanks again to everyone who helped! You made my night!

Good DXing! Make sure the connections on the starter are OK. If they are, replace the starter. I would replace the cable from the battery if you can, especially if you are in a rust area!

FYI: The solenoid/relay near the battery was working. The solenoid is a magnet. The click was the magnet being magnetized.

May I ask what these connections are called? Perhaps I can ask for those at the same time I get the starter.
Also, which cable was that? I looked under the hood but was having a hard time tracing the cable.
I have to think that it was the starter and/or the connections to it but I don't know what those connections are called...
Thanks again!

Re: 94 4 Cyl Ford Ranger Won't Start / Turn Over - Help Appreciated!
doesn't the stater just have the eye lugs that crimp onto the wire for contacts?
and i believe he was just talking about replacing the wire from the battery to the starter just to be sure it doesnt have a break in it or cause problems in the near future
