Do routine maintenance on it to prevent knocking...
On a serious note, someone who knows more than I will chime in.

change the oil and dont run it hot? ..basically just keep up with the PM (preventative maintenance) also there are a ton of "parts truck rangers" so unless u absolutely wanna rebuild your motor i would suggest getting a used one ...sift thru craigslist i always see at least 10 everytime i look but b careful and use common sense

66,000 and knocking? Was it beaten to death with no maintenance?

Also, do you mean knocking as in there's a rod hanging out the motor, or more like a ticking?

the motor came from the junkyard out of a mustang and one of the guys who i know said that more than likely they were dogging that motor before they got rid the car. So now I'm looking at some rebuild kits for it. So where and good places to look for an engine rebuild kit for 86 2.3l.

no one is gonna be able to give you an estimate based on the description "knocking" get it in somewhere for a compression test and find out what the actual problem is.

86 ranger would not have a digit for 100k mile. i doubt it was actually 66k. but i agree if it is knocking would look for reman or jy motor. orieley shows one for about $1500.

probably worth a 100 dollar investment before we start buying engines for 1500 bucks and then labor and time without a vehicle on top of it.

thats very true because I don't want to spend 1,500 on a motor dont have the money for it. So how hard is it to run a compression test on it.

Have you checked google or youtube with the term, "compression test" or "how to do a compression test..."

Common sense please

Smart choice swapping in an engine that was beat on before being sold to a junkyard.

Is the "knocking" a constant or some of the time??
Were you told it was "beaten on" BEFORE you purchased it and bought it anyway or told AFTER you bought it??
More likely 166,000.

There's not a Tech Article here at FRF concerning Compression Test--How To????

One can acquire rebuild parts from www.Rockauto.com and they'll be significantly less costly than from advance, auto zone, carquest, napa, o'reilly's.

Your Ranger is 1st generation.
