What to do now ?
Okay figured out out 94 ranger has a bad head gasket it's got 100 k on it what would you guys do fix the head myself or just get a new engine?
I read somewhere you shouldn't put fresh heads / gaskets on high mileage engines
Opinions welcome and wanted

Do the valves and stuff need to be removed when it gets milled?

Re: What to do now ?
Leave the valves, rockers, cam and related assembled. The shop will remove, clean, inspect and reassemble the valve train. Remove any other accessory brackets and bolts for safe keeping to insure you have everything to reassemble engine. I do recommend you purchase new exhaust manifold bolts/studs for reassembly. Give the shop a call just to verify their routine.
Do note that the shop should first check the head for cracks, and if they find any (they often do) you'll be looking for a new/reman/salvage head. Been there, done that. I was quoted $200 to rebuild and resurface my head, but it was cracked in between the valve seats. Had a tough time finding a salvage head for my 2000 2.5 LIMA head, but finally did and had it rebuilt. Finally got it back for $410. You price may vary, and hopefully your head isn't cracked. All said and done my son's truck is purring like a kitten now, so I'm pleased. Good luck!

Re: What to do now ?
Surely you'll have the valves done at this time too, ya? I used the Felpro headgasket kit that they sell for $75 at the usual places. Note that the set includes valve seals that the shop will need if they do a valve job. Remember to give those to them when you drop off the head. I forgot and had to pay $20 more for another set because mine were 2 hours away at my son's house.

Re: What to do now ?
If I were pulling the head, I would have the valves done as insurance and improved efficiency, but I'm thinking long term. This motor should have another 100,000 miles left in it if taken care of properly.
It sounds like maybe you only need a temporary fix, in which case maybe you can cut a few corners and save a few bucks. If that's the case, you might also forgo the full gasket kit and just price out only the gaskets you definitely need.

Do these 4 cyls run that long? My impression was they died around 100 150k
Our guess is the guy who sold it to us put block sealer In it (20k miles ago) because we have serviced it and taken such good care of it it i can't see how this would have blown anyway

One last question. Do the valves on this engine get adjusted? I was told they do not , if they do is there a sequence or some type or order ?

you got the wrong impression...lol
at 150k these engines are just getting broken in
if the previous owner put sealer in 20k miles ago, it means he didn't take care of the truck and something overheated causing a leak. (or just plain piss poor maintenance)
most sealers are just a temporary fix
get the head checked and while you got it apart, change the water pump, thermostat and timing belt. it'll save you in the long run.

Re: What to do now ?
Earlier you said you were going to drop in a V8. How long do you plan on driving this truck with the stock motor? Advice that forum users give will vary depending on your goals. Details matter.
