Chances are its the sending unit. Not positive but it's probably in the tank. You can fix it if you want or drop the coin and have a shop do it.

I'm not positive because I can't sit there and diagnose the truck but if that is what it is. The sending unit is part of the in tank fuel pump. As far as getting to it Idk if it would be easier to drop the tank or lift the bed. I would probably lift the bed because it's like 8 bolts and a connector and it lifts right off (with the help of a baddy or two) either way you need access to the top of the tank. Disconnect the fuel lines. Unscrew the retaining ring and pull the pump out. Careful there will be fuel still in the pump. I believe the sending unit is in the top portion of the fuel pump. But I'm not sure I haven't taken mine out. After all that's done you should be able to go to Napa or AutoZone and buy a new sending unit and swap parts.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a mechanic yet and all the things you may or may not do to your truck is of your responsibility and I cannot be held responsible if you fuck your truck up.

That being said. Have fun and enjoy learning more about your truck.

I've replaced the entire fuel assembly in my ranger and it is fairly simple just a lil detailed. If you were to see a mechanic do it in person you'd be mad at yourself. As mentioned before you remove the bed and and have a buddy help you set it aside. Be sure to disconnect your

Connector for license plate illuminator
Unscrew your fuel filler hose
Six bolts securing bed to frame

Once the bed is off use a shop vac to clean around the top and around fuel assembly unit.
Have plenty of rags and a bucket near by to place assembly once disconnected. You'll need fuel line disconnect tool might be better to by a set specifically for Ford vehicles or they make a 4 way wrench that covers a couple sizes of fuel lines. Use tool to disconnect and for good maintenance I wrap the disconnected hoses with rags to protect from contamination of dirt debris etc. There is a large nylon nut fastening the assembly in tank. with a strap wrench or gently with large channel locks turn counterclockwise to loosen and continue removal by hand to avoid stripping. Disconnect electrical connector and remove.

And you can then remove the assembly from tank and replace your sending unit. Might consider replacing the pump too while your in there and reinstall assembly with a NEW gasket or oring and lubricate oring for easier installation.

97 Ford Ranger 2.3L 4 CYL... SIDE STEP BABY.... (and running hotter than hell).
