Thumbs down engine ticking????

i recently bought a 89 ranger 2.3liter 4cly 2wd with the 5speed tranny. on a 1 1/2hour drive today it started making what sounds like a very loud lifter tick. i checked the oil which is good and it only makes this sound between 2000 and 4000 rpms. im not sure what it is ive been told its most likely a bad or busted wrist band or that i spun a main bearing in the top end. any suggestions let me know. thanx
-Allen-
