1999 Ranger New clutch, not able to shift gears still?
I don't know how well or legible this is going to be so if you have questions please ask, but here's the story:
We have a 1999 Ranger with a manual transmission. We got a brand stinking new clutch (that was said to be self adjusting) and popped that sucker in there.
We did not rotate or do anything with the flywheel because he said it looked fine. He was sure to clean it and the clutch disc properly before installing it.
While putting in the new clutch we broke the push rod connected to the clutch master cylinder so we just went ahead and put a new one in there. When it was first put in we didn't bench bleed it so we had to take it back out and bench bleed it then put it back in.
After all of this, and after bleeding the clutch following the directions in the repair manual, the clutch still will not engage.
The only things I could think of would be that the clutch did not "self adjust" or we could be low on transmission fluid, but I don't know if that would cause inability to shift.
We've been messing with this truck and been without a vehicle for a week and any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

on my tranny - should be the same as yours - there is a bolt on the drives side about halfway up the tranny IIRC, and if you loosen it, then fluid should come out. of not, i believe it is low...it's been years since i was under there though...

Re: 1999 Ranger New clutch, not able to shift gears still?
If I am low on tranny fluid, wouldn't i still be able to shift gears though? I know I shouldn't drive while low on fluid, but I'm trying to get to the root of why the clutch is still acting like its not engaging.

Oh please don't apologize! There's no need for that, I thank you for replying! All we can do is hope for someone that does know a little more than the both of us to see and reply on this thread! lol :tounge:
I'm hoping it won't be that complicated and that he made a stupid error that we have overlooked...

^this!
Also, you probably have a huge air bubble where the plunger sits in the master cylinder. You can remove the plunger to let fluid flow out and put it back in to get rid of the air bubble. Possibility, but I would say you definitely have air in your lines.
Check your clutch master cylinder level and your trans fluid level.
If you didn't replace the slave cylinder, you might as well remove everything and replace it now.

We have replaced the slave cylinder not too extremely long ago so I don't think it's that, but you say you can pull the push rod back out of the master cylinder after you initially put it in?
Also, I didn't watch when he put the clutch in, but I'm pretty sure he's not air-headed enough to put it in backwards... Wouldn't that be fairly obvious? lol
Thank you so much for all of your replies! =)

Re: 1999 Ranger New clutch, not able to shift gears still?
Yes, you can remove the push-rod, but the plunger will be attached to it. You have to remove the clutch sensor, disconnect the push-rod (where it is attached to the peddle assembly), remove the C-clip, and pull the plunger all the way out (beware that fluid will spill onto your floor.) Once the air pocket has been purged, replace the plunger where it came from. Installation is reverse of removal.

We bench bled the crap out of it, but this seems to be very likely cause I just don't see what else would cause it to not work.. =(
I will keep you guys updated on what happens, it may not be till Wednesday night, but in the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, "I'll be back."

Re: 1999 Ranger New clutch, not able to shift gears still?
when you bench bled it did you pull the line to the tranny and bleed it with the master cylinder. also when you install it back in the truck you should let some fluid flow thru the slave cylinder bleeder. theoretically the way the lines are made when you disconnect at the tranny no air enters the line but sometimes when you remove at master cylinder you may get air in the line. you can check for air by looking thru the square window on the bell houseing and watch the movement of the slave cylinder, it should move about 3/8 of an inch or more. also you should be able to turn the drive shaft by hand in gear clutch engaged, truck needs to be off the ground, if you can't do this air is in the line.
