Go on YouTube and search for a video for ranger clutch bleeding the best way to bleed it off is with the plunger under the clutch pedal itself its not hard to do at all and it will get any and all air out

*sigh* Here goes...a simple fix, with no tools needed...

Only question I'm going to ask: When you try and shift, do you put your foot on the brake? If you don't, your truck won't go into gear--there's a switch on the brake pedal that prevents the truck from engaging the gears without the brake pedal pushed.

Don't believe me, check your owner's manual under "Shifting Your Ranger." Ran into this myself and could have beat my head against the wall when I found out how easy this problem is!! LOL

----------

Oh, and by the way, you have brake fluid for your clutch, transmission fluid (ATF-type fluid) in the trans to simply keep the gears and other moving parts cool.

Just some info I thought you might want to know.

Ok now listen to me. You need to do this where if the truck trys to go it will not hit anything. You know like out side pointed down a road. Can you put the truck in first gear with the engine off. If so do that. Push the clutch pedal down. Start engine. If the truck takes off then the clutch is enguaged and is not dis-enguaging at all. If it sits there then you probably have air in the lines. And it is not dis-enguaging fully and it is spinning the transmission just enough that would be why you can't get it into gear. if you can start the truck and put it in gear and it will not go anywhere in any gear then the clutch is not enguaging. then maybe clutch disc flipped over or throw out bearing is stuck on shaft, something along those lines. hope i am helping and not confusing you.

Oh, one other thing to check--

To see if you can shift, try and shift into Reverse (from Neutral) with the engine on. If it won't go into gear, or you hear a grinding noise, then yes, you probably have air in the line. Also, make sure your pedal has sufficient pressure--you should have more pressure in your clutch pedal then you do your brake pedal. Also, this is also a test to do with the brake pedal depressed when you try and shift.

Not sure if this is any help, but I changed out a clutch in the past and had the same problem.... Couldn't find anything wrong, so took it all apart and looked at everything again REALLY CLOSELY and found the release bearing had come apart and when I replaced it, there was still some of it left on the transmission. That kept it from shifting. I was in such a hurry as it was cold out and i was doing this on a hill with sandbags keeping the truck from rolling. LOL!

not sure if a 99 is the same as my 94 but if you have a air bubble in the master you wont have a clutch and the only way to get it out is to remove the master from firewall and bleed manually or use a presure bleeder on it... either way its a pain in the ass. on mine anyway they might have fixd the angle of the master on yours making this process easier. I dont think so though. good luck

hmm just replace the disc and nothing else? No new pressure plate and throw out bearing? sounds like its installed in backward the disc that is. Or the threw out bearing is not right in the guide of the transmission shaft threw the clutch.... dont know you might have to have time take the manual transmission back out to check

Sorry, dude, but I looked at my manual, and it specifically states that you MUST have your brake pedal pushed to in order to get the truck into gear. How do I know? I HAVE A STICK TOO--4 SPEED WITH OVERDRIVE, NOT A 5-SPEED.

Idiot. By the way, here's some info for you: A five-speed manual trans will have a true fifth gear, with the engine coupled to the trans in a 1:1 ratio. An overdrive gear (4-speed with O/D) is coupled, in overdrive, in a 1:.75 ratio.

Man, I love it when I know my s*^t! lol

What's your point with that useless information in this thread?

Just so you know kiddo, I went to college to become a mechanic which included transmission classes. While I am glad you can read from your Chilton's manual, perhaps you should read the O.P.'s question next time.

He was talking about his clutch; obviously a 5-speed manual.

and then when it is flooded and you need to push down on the gas........it will be like Twister!!!!.............right foot on the clutch...left foot on the brake and then lean down and press down on the gas peddle with your right hand as you turn the key with the left hand............you sure know your S@!t
