Default '93 sputtering problems--need advice

My daughter's 1993 Ranger started sputtering last week. It would run fine then, suddenly, the "check engine" light would come on and it would sputter as if it wasn't getting enough gas.

I was close so it got me home. The next day, I got in and it fired right up and drove normally for about an hour. But later that afternoon, the same thing happened again so I got it to a mechanic.

His first diagnosis was some bad gas. He put in some additives and ran it nearly dry. He added more gas and more additive and it was running well. Just as I pick it up at his garage and head home, it starts up again.

I figured this has had to happen to others here so I'd appreciate any advice I might share with my mechanic. Thanks.

Don't know yet.

When I left, he was going to hook it up and check.

Actually, he did hook it up during the last "check engine" weirdness.

It's totally random as to when it does this.

I get a call today (yes, it's been that long) saying that he took it to a friend who works at a Ford shop who hooked it up and found it was the fuel pump.

Now he want $600+ for all the work including dropping the tank to clean it out because he didn't know it was the pump. A tow is a part of this as well.

Anyone know how much this should cost?
