Question Overheated -now won't start

Hi All -

This is about my '94 2.3L SOHC 2wd mt Ranger.

I was pulling off the interstate with the temp gauge pegged, and spewing steam when the engine quit. It would spin but not restart.

Had it towed home.

Waterpump was past 'dead' it must have angelic help for some time.

Replaced the pump and for good measure the thermostat.

Filled it with water to do a leak and temp control check before I pour in the Prestone and lube.

It cranks OK but won't start.

PCM relay is almost new.

Fuel pump starts.

Tailpipe smells of gasoline.

Is there an electrical problem that typically accompanies an overheated condition?

Thanks!

- Bill

Unhappy Apparently not electrical but mechanical :(

Thanks for your interest.

I've been at it since my last post.

Yes, I have plenty of spark.

Timing seems to be OK.

What I don't have is compression: Cyl 1-4::60 53 30 125. Yipes!!!

Will dump some motor oil in sequence next (tomorrow AM) and see if I get compression so I can get a sense of whether it's pistons or valves/head gasket.

Looks like I'm going to get very familiar with this great little engine before I'm done.

I was putting off tackling the power steering pump (its getting moist w/ ps fluid) but it looks like it will be included with the head or engine work.

If the head is warped is it better to get it trued up w/ new guides/valves as necessary or to get another head?

Other thoughts?

Thanks!

- Bill

Question Thank you for your insight

Yes, since the compression is incredibly varied I thought I'd do a wet compression test and then pull the head.

I was thinking of adding an ounce of motor oil to each cylinder through the sparkplug hole before doing the test. Is there a 'rule of thumb' wrt the amount of oil to add? Any advice on whether to use regular motor oil vs STP or similiar 'motor honey'?

The fix or get a 'new' (to me) head is a good idea. I'm on the edge of 'NASCAR Country' so there are rebuilders everywhere.

Thanks!

Red face Update - Wet Compressin Test Results -

Hi All -

Update:

Wet Compression (10 ml 10W-30 motor oil in each cyl before test)
Cyl 1-4:: 80-90 90-90 90-60 210-210

(Note: Second number is addl compression test w/o new oil 5-10 min after first test).

So...

I'm looking for an good engine rebuilder in the Charlotte-Greensboro, NC corridor.

Suggestions/References?

Thanks!

Anybody Home???

The head is off.

The head gasket came off with the head and there are *no* obvious cuts between the cylinders.

Suggestions?

Head was cracked.

Replaced head and of course all the gaskets, the timing belt, and the plugs. It started right up and runs fine.
