Unhappy Clutch problem somehow?

I have a 1999 Model Ranger with a 2.5L/4 Cyl engine, 5-Speed manual trans. Lately I have been noticing that the truck would sometimes (I don't know if this is an actual term) 'over-rev', and it was as if the clutch was being ridden or something. Well, yesterday we went to the lake and the truck had a lot harder time than usual pulling our boat out of the water (which, in my opinion I don't even think we should be pulling that boat with this truck) and in any case the problem got worse. Now it's as if the clutch pedal is halfway depressed (when I'm no where near it with my foot) at all times.

My friend told me that I needed to get a new "clutch pressure plate?", but that friend of mine I don't really trust all that much, so I wanted to get a second opinion here.

Thanks so much!

If it seems like the engine is revving higher than normal in gear then the clutch is probably on it's last legs. A good way to tell is put it in a high gear at highway speed and floor it, it the engine revs way up but the speed does not increase much then its a clutch. How many miles does this truck have on it?

Yes...over rev. is a proper description. Sounds like you need a new clutch assy. Pressure plate, clutch plate, pilot bearing, slave cyl. with throwout bearing. In other words a clutch kit. Either turn the flywheel or get a new one.

It does that in all gears now, when I press the gas, the engine revs up and I barely move anywhere at all.

It has right around 226K miles on it, an as far as I know the clutch hasn't been changed, at least since we got the truck with about 80K miles on it.

We put a new slave cyl. in it about a year ago, so would that one still be good enough?

Yup the clutch is toast. When you replace a clutch at a bare MINIMUM you need to replace the pressure plate and friction disk (clutch kit includes both of these) as for the slave, if its not acting up and its that young then I would leave it be. Also, I would atleast have the flywheel resurfaced at a machine shop, it will extend the life of the new clutch dramatically. Hope this helps!

Buy a NEW SLAVE CYL. If you don`t you`ll have to pull the trans. again to replace it. cheap ins.

You put a new slave in but did not replace the clutch. Really? Are you sure you are not thinking of the clutch master cylinder that was replaced?
