Today when I tried to go into reverse it started to and then made a loud clucking noise. Then I couldn't reverse, it acted like "N" and I tried many times and it didn't work. I drove to another place (5-7 min later) and tried again, no luck.

When I got home, I tried again, but this time it did go into reverse but it won't make a clucking noise and it would jerk a little, I tried 3 times, did the same thing 3 times.

What could it possibly be? I had a tune-up about 3-4k miles ago, and just did a oil change to full syn about 500 miles ago.

1999, 2wd, auto, 146k miles.

each gear has its own set of clutches / discs. sounds like you burnt out the reverse gear clutch pack. it can be individually repaired however a full rebuild is always the best since the fluid contamination will have already begun scorching the other packs. it is common for reverse to go out like that however I really have no idea why.

How much does that usually run to fix it all? Again, it is a auto.

i have the same issue...truck goes into reverse goes a few inches and then locks up. feels like the brakes are engaged, but i am not pushing the brakes. any one found out what causes this and what to fix? Prices? Easy to do??
