Question Where is the starter motor on a Ranger 2.5 thunder 2004

Hi to all fellow Ranger owners from Nottinghamshire in the UK(Robin Hood county)

My trustry ranger has decided to not start after 2 years of unblemlished reliabilty.

Read a few threads and want to try the old 'hit the starter motor' trick but dont know where it is??? Can anyone guide me. Ie battery side or alternator side. or if there is an engine picture anywhere on this forum

Andy

Hi Stewart, do you know where the starter motor is on a 2.5 thunder 2004. Found a link that says next to 'bell housing', gearbox I presume?? Had a look cant get a hammer in there or an extension bar to give it a whack.

Yep found it. Not even going to attempt to take off and bench test.

My Ranger has only done 74k miles,, all proper road journeys,I did 20k miles last year so it is not a run around doing loads of small journeys. Is it possible that the starter motor can be worn already, or is it just one of those things. Trying to eliminate any common fault these babies may have.

Obviously it is winter in UK but nothing compared to the US, battery is well up, alternator banging out 14.4v constant .It's Ok once I jump start it but its when its left over night/long periods. All I get is the dreaded clicking of the solenoid.

In UK every drive in repair garage that offers free battery testing are full of s**t and will sell you a battery just to make a sale.So any advice would be gladly accepted.

Well guys, we had the coldest night so far at the weekend and the little beauty cracked up like normal first turn off the key.

This was after spending saturday pricing up the usual suspects, battery, alternator and dreaded starter motor, I had a sit down, cup of tea and thought I am an electrician go through the basics you fool!

So I Volt checked battery & alternator, fine, managed to get my hands in to check solenoid connection, removed and reseated the solenoid connector.

I can only presume it was a bad connection on the starter motor solenoid connector.

So to anyone else out there having problems check before you spend you hard earned cash!!!
