Default 2.3 ranger runs fine until warmed up

So its a 2001 5 speed. i was moving this weekend, and heading back to my house to move another load of stuff when suddenly i ran into trouble.

the truck will run and idle fine until its warmed up, but once its close to operating temp it idles down to around 500 rpms and wont rev up no matter how much gas i give it.

i can restart the truck and it will idle fine for about 30 seconds and then it idles down and just runs terribly. its not drivable. CEL was on but i disconnected the battery and made sure all the sensors had a good connection. Now the CEL is not on and it still runs like dogshit

the CEL was your friend. I would get a scanner and try and catch a pending code. could be MAF, ECT, fuel pressure?..........I would start doing the maintenance on it.....clean the MAF, IACV, PCV, fuel filter etc. check the air-filter and intake and make sure nothing got clogged in there. also look for a cracked vacuum hose.

Seconded, a lot of auto stores will loan you a code scanner for a deposit or collateral, so you don't need to buy one.. Just call the retail chain auto stres around you.. Autozone, o reilly's, advanced auto, napa etc

Check codes first. Then You may as well clean the IAC and MAF while you're at it. There are some easy to follow instructions over in the how to section of the forum
