Default 1989 2.3L engine HPvs 2004 2.3L engine HP?

This is kind of a "how come..." type of question. I have a 1989 Ranger with a 2.3L engine, everything works fine but I'm looking for a new vehicle anyway.... so here is the question:

When I look at the specs, I see that a more modern 2.3L engine is rated at 143 HP with mabey 20 ft-lbs more torque as compared to the 1989 2.3L engine which is rated at only 100 HP. Both vehicles seem to be similarly setup. So why the difference in horsepower? Did Ford change the ignition somehow to get better power? Or are they simply rating the power output at a higher rpm to make it look better? Anybody know?

A 43% increase in horsepower from 100 hp is real attractive if it really does mean better power on the hills ect. but if it is only a higher rating because Ford is rating the hp at 5500 rpm vs say 4000 rpm, then that's different.

The older Lima 2.3L are SOHC, and a design left over from the Pintos in the 70s. The new Duratech 2.3L is DOHC, and a completely different motor. To try to make more power, towards the end of the Lima motors life span, Ford enlarged it to 2.5L, but the 70s architecture just wasn't up to the task in terms of efficiency. So Ford went with the Duratech engine to make 143hp stock, while delivering 30mpg on the highway.
