Default Gas pedal lag.

So my ranger is relatively new to me. It's a 2001 xlt with the 2.3L 4banger that has 137xxx miles. Last night I was driving home from my girlfriends house, and was wondering how "slow" or "fast" the accelerating is. I had just turned onto the main road, where the speed limit 55. I was climbing in speed and at around 35-40 I wanted to see what would happen if I floored it. Well, nothing really happened... For a while... It took about 3-4 seconds for it to even accelerate at all... I watched the rpm's stay still THEN jump... I figured this was weird and was just wondering if that's what you get with the 2.3L engine. It may just be that I'm used to driving my moms brand new Infiniti g37...
Anyways any answer or clarification would be cool.

I would say normal since you have the 2.3 L engine. It is a dog but dependable.

Manual or auto? If it's auto, it probably just took a sec for it to drop a gear to accelerate. If it's manual, your clutch was probably slipping.

I was kinda just thinking that I guess. Just wanted to get more opinions! Haha. I'm not complaining, I got the truck for free and I love it! Thanks for the input.

Auto. That's a good point. Would the throttle cable mod help?

Yes. It should make it a lot better. I'd give that a try.

If you have a lot of slack in your throttle cable, you probably aren't getting full throttle when you mash your pedal to the floor. That would explain why it would take a few secs to kick down. The throttle cable mod will take up this slack so you can actually get full throttle when you floor it.

Couldnt be clutch. Clutch would control the motion. Hes talking about the rpms. You can get the rpms up to 10k but it wouldnt go anywhere without you pulling out the clutch. Maybr spray the gas pedal wires with wd-40? My 16 year old guess.

No they just drop down a gear or two to accelerate faster. Overdrive is for economy purposes.

There is a small chance that you got the throttle, therefore the TPS up into a dirty, rarely used region. As the wiper in the TPS moved to the dusty spot, it may take a second for the electricity to burn the dust off.

It's a long shot, but a possibility.
