Default Rear end leak at axle on 97 2.3...

On my 97 2.3L I started noticing a whining sound coming from the rear of the truck while driving. Once I took a good look at the rear end today(a good 300 miles later since I was out of town when it started), I noticed a good amount of heavy oil and dirt on the driver side of the axle at the rear end where there is none on the passenger side. I guess its pretty safe to assume that I'm losing differential fluid. Question is, how big a deal is it to take that thing apart and replace whatever gasket, seal, (What would it be, anyway?) is giving me the trouble (Does it require a garage full of specialty tools?)? Is it worth having it rebuilt just in case there's any damage in there? Or a quicker fix the way to go?

sounds like the axle shaft seal leaked and the noise would be the wheel bearing. if you drove 300 miles on it with the noise there is likely much wear on the gears. this is not a novice job even a do it yourselfer can pinch a finger fooling with the gears trying to get the c clips out. and the pinion lock bolt can be stripped quite easily. definetly is a job for a shop. or consider a used unit / that would be something you could do yourself with repair book. contact your ford dealership with your vin number to get the exact ratio on your unit if you are gonna hunt for a used one.

there is a vent on the rear end right where you are talking about check and see if the hose s cracked.. i would pull the filller plug( drivers side even with the driveshaft. i think yo just use a 3/8 extension on your rachet.) on the diff and check for fluid. you should be able to stick your finger in the hole and feel fluid. you can fill it up till it comes out you use 80w90 oil. you need special additive or oil if yo have liimted slip which i dont think you do. your seals would leak around the wheels. a whine/ click could be a ujoint. check the fluid level and get back to us. on the drivers side door jamb is your certification label. the axle code is on there. if it is an 86 it is the same as mine.

Hey modelageek, how often would you recommend changing that rear diff fluid? Im looking at the fill plug, it has red thread dressing on it, and no visible way of knowing how far to thread it back in once removed? any info on replacing the plug? 2.3L 2x4, 36k miles. thanks all

it is a pipe plug, so put some threat sealant on it and sng it down good, I want to say fuild needs to be changed about every 50k miles (very few do this)

if all you have is a leaky wheel seal and or bad wheel bearing.. you can do it yourself .. but it is a bit of a PITA to do ( changing the bearing is even more so, need a hooked slide hammer to pull it out)

cool bogusSVO, I 've never heard of a pipe plug, do you think teflon tape would be as good as thread sealant? Also what does the pipe plug "seat" on? Is there a lip inside that diff case? just curious. thanks bogus!

a pipe plug is a tapered thread plug.... it seals agaist its threads... teflon tape will work fine.. or a finger full of RTV...
