Default 2.5 TD very hard to start

Hi all,
Looking for some help, my 2005 ranger 2.5 turbo diesel is very hard to start, battery is good, new fuel filter head/primer fitted, new glow plugs and relay fitted and all working good, no fault codes and coolant temperaure sensor and air intake temperature all reading normal, engine will crank and eventually it will start if you pump the accelerater pedal, or a little squirt of easy start and it will fire up, once running seems to have plenty of power and drives ok, not smoking. even when hot i turn the engine off and within a couple of minutes it will be just as hard to start again no matter what the temperature is. I'm baffled with this one. any help much appreciated. thanks in advance

Does it seem to turn over as fast as it use to? Did you check the glow plug to be sure you have power to them? Is there any chance you have air getting into the fuel lines? Pumping the pedal should have no effect but keeping it at about 1/2 throttle should help. It does sound like poor fuel feed while starting from your description.

Hi
thanks for the reply, seems to be cranking at the same speed as always, have checked for battery voltage at glow plugs when relay is on - all good, I think the pumping the throttle was just coincidence, even holding it about half way doesn't seem to help, I have eliminated the rest of the fuel system before the high pressure pump by using a jerry can and a hand priming pump. Still no difference even after getting the engine started and leaving it running for a few minutes to make sure there is no air in system, as soon as i stop the engine within a minute it doesn't want to start again. My thinking is that it might be a problem with the high pressure pump, does anyone have any test data for these pumps?

Hi. Yes i got to the bottom of this problem and im afraid it aint cheap! It needed a new fuel pump- turns out the fuel pump going is a common problem. new, the fuel pumps are about £600, i got a second hand one for £250 and had it fitted by a garage for £200. However, it gave my truck a new lease of life, fast, reliable and more economical! Good luck.
P.s if you buy a second hand one make sure you get one with the same part numbers as the original- ford did 3 or 4 different pumps for the 2.5 turbo diesel engine- Ebay may be a good place to start.....
