Best Air filter for 2.3L 07?
I was gonna go ahead and get a K&N replacement but I've read a few things about the oil in the filters messing with the Mass Air Flow sensors in some cars and thought about getting one of these instead:
http://www.autoanything.com/air-filt...4151A-1A1.aspx
Anybody had experience with these dry filters? Would the oil in the K&N even be an issue with my engine? IS this the most useless question EVAR?

I've had the k and n drop in filter in my truck since i bought it.. as long as you follow directions while cleaning the filter and dont over oil it you'll have no problem with it.

Upgrading your filter won't give you better performance, if that's what your looking for.

I wasn't looking for or expecting some big performance jump out of just an air filter swap. I just wanted a better alternative to shitty 14 dollar air filters that'll have to be constantly replaced and won't treat me engine as well either.
http://www.autoanything.com/air-filt...2090A-1A1.aspx
Link from the same site^ . There's about a billion glowing reviews from ranger owners, a few of which say they get about +2mpg from just their K&N filter replacement. Is there any truth to this at all or just exaggeration?

You will not get any mileage increase from a filter. 2mpg (even 1) is worth HUGE dollars to an OEM, it would come with it stock.

Damn. So will a K&N filter at least treat my engine better than a cheapo drop in filter, or are they just strictly made to last longer? Will a better air filter help with longevity? My ranger has less than 12k miles and I plan on holding on to it for a while so I'm wanting to keep good care of it. Please help this newb out .

Your making this too complicated. All a filter does is clean out the debris in the air that trys to get sucked down into the intake.
I don't understand how it "treats the engine better". It dosen't change the oil for you.

You're wasting you money on it. It won't treat you any differently. If you want to pay more for it and mess around with oiling it and all that crap, go for it. But IMO, the stock type paper element filters are so cheap, replacing it every year or two is inconsequential.

Well that is where I fall back to whatever is the least amount of effort. In this case, that would be not bothering with a silly K&N.

I think I might just good ahead and get the K&N. That way I get to have one less thing pitched to me at every shop. brilliant!

I bought an K&N air filter for my truck and I noticed a big difference from a shitty FRAM filter. I had fram in my Focus the whole time i had it, used it in my ranger for a good year. Got a little anxious and decided to try the air filter. I got 2 more mpgs(i record how much gas i use =p) and it just worked better for me. If you are planning on keeping your ranger til the end of time go for it, in the long run itll save you more money than a paper filter
