Well it's been a while since I've last been on here but anyways here is my question my 96 ranger 2.3l just recently started making and lifter or valve tick and I was wondering what the easiest and cheapest way to get it to stop or fix it and the motor only has 190xxx on it if any one has any answers that would be great

Ugg, you're right.... Well....could be not enough oil... Have you checked for adequate oil pressure at the valve train? Or a lash adjuster has failed... The latter being the cheaper fix compared to the engine damage that can occur with no oil....

I have had the same problem...usually only at start up. Does not tick while driving. 130,000 miles. Might try a thicker oil next oil change. Lucas oil additive didn't help. Might add seafoam to the oil too....trying anything. Very annoying.

Well at least I'm not the only one experiencing this problem and I have some 10w30 that I might put in it tomorrow since I didn't have a chance to change the oil today and also I want to try putting seafoam in the oil as well

Let me know if the thicker oil helps...next oil change is a month or two away.

I have heard that a bad exhaust manifold gasket can cause lifter noise to escape the motor...I will try this next. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the rusted manifold bolts out?

I think we're on our own here...nobody else chiming in. I might take it to a shop later this week...not sure I want to break off any manifold bolts. Let you know if this fixes issue.

Lifter tick is common on the 2.5...

Mine does it all the time...

Not sure why you would try a heavier oil rather than a thinner oil to try to fill a collapsed lifter;

I wouldn't try too many additives, but do what you will...

Have you tried to seafoam through the brake booster yet (look up how to use it this way if you haven't already...)

A shop will tell you they can't tell you EXACTLY what it is unless they tear into the motor... Or at least that is the general response anybody gets.

It's either a lifter or a sticking valve.. If you want to rule out a valve, try the seafoam (it still could be a valve if this doesn't solve it though; it's still worth a shot.)

Go ahead and check your exhaust/egr pipes for cracks as well as putting your head right next to the O gasket in-line on the exhaust pipe... See if you hear any leaking coming from there...

Check the two rubber hoses coming off of the EGR tube and make sure they are still intact and connected on both ends...

I had lifter tick on my 2002 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L (they are known for this) I would run 89 octane from time to time and the issue never came back.
