Default 1988 Ranger 2.9 problem

I am having trouble with my 88 ford ranger. I have changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor button, fuel filters and the timing belt. All of these were checked by a repair station. It runs fine until it warms up. Then it starts bogging down at times and then comes out of it and runs fine for a while and then will do it again. I don't have much power up hill and am using an ungodly amount of gas.I have gone from over 20 mpg to under 10 mpg.I can also smell gas after I drive it. Got any ideas?

have you checked your injectors? it kind of sounds like one is stuck open that would explain the unburnt fuel poor performance and crappy mpg

I literally just finished finding out what the hell was wrong with mine. I changed the fuel pump, Installed a filter in the Fuel reservoir, put a new fuel filter on it,retarded the timing, took CAT off to see if it was clogged, Advanced the timing, I bought a new TPS in hopes that it would help..but it did no such thing, I then cleaned the distributor cap, changed the spark plug wires, and hooked up a new MAP sensor..and BAM ran, and idled fine. So I said i want to make sure that the MAP sensor is what made it work..so I took the old one and re hooked it up and it still ran fine..so my thought is...change the Spark plug wires, and get atleast a new MAP sensor to hook up and see what She does. Hope this helps.

mine would cut out and run really rich with gas and i found that my o2 sensor on my cat had the wires burnt off and that was the problem
