Default Back firing

I have recently noticed that my 98 is back firing except it does not do it when I accelerate. It only does it when I slow down. Does anyone know what it may be? I am replacing the wires tomorrow. My dad said that it may be the timing. If it helps at all, I did the mod where the exhaust spark is re-routed. if anyone has any ideas just throw them down.
