Lightbulb Rough idle cold seems to "load up"

2.3l 1994 ranger 4x4 5 speed. When starting engine cold i get a very low idle and rough running. Rev up and still idles very low. Tach broken so just very low. I take off and it gets to about 15 in first and kind of sits there for a few seconds then revs and speeds up. After that it will accelerate fine. But idle will not improve for a few blocks. Any help would be cool. I have done map sensor clean, iac clean. New plugs. New wires. Cleaned t body. New air filter.

I'm having similar issues with mine. Still haven't figured it out. I've done all the same things you've done. I'm thinkin the timing belt jumped a tooth on mine but I haven't checked it yet. Are you having loss of power too?

Well i just did timing belt on mine. The cam didn't line up "dead on." so i messed around ahead one tooth and back one. Seemed the same. Which is weird. But there is no way to dial it in. Unless the oil pump can be moved. I thought it should have more power. You know 65 on the highway shouldn't be such a struggle. But it is. 65 in fourth aint so bad. But in o/d flat is ok wind in your face might as well shift to 4th.

did this happen after you did the timing belt.........I would think it would not run at all if you did this but the cam spins twice for each crank.....I have heard of people having to spin the cam around 360 and then the mark lines up.......but i would think it would not even run if you did that..........did the belt break or did you just swap it out?.....

if the "oil pump" you are taking about is the pulley...that is just an aux pulley on your truck.....it does not need to be lined up.....they swapped the aux pulley for the oil pump in 1995

It just ran so bad before timing belt was replaced. I did a tune up the hard way. Broke 3 plugs off in the drivers side of the head. Removed head and changed timing belt at same time. Runs a hell of a lot better but has "load up" feeling and every once in a while first time taking off it back fires thru intake.

All is fixed. The cel was burnt out. I had numerous codes. Replaced ign module and coils to fix.

Chuck, I have the same symtoms and have done everything that you have done (including coils) except changing ignition module. AS you know I have a fuel leak on top of my fuel tank so Im gonna work on that before going any further. For these 2.3 moters to have such a "bullet proof" reputation there are pages upon pages of people having the same problems as you and I. Sometimes never getting the problem figured out or solved. So the reputation must mean "bullets" from a soft air rifle? Im glad you got yours fugured out. Pray for me buddy!

The reason you see a lot of posts claiming these engines are bulletproof is because they are as bulletproof as any engine can be!...You do need to change the oil and coolant more then every 18 years!!....the 2.3 had a slight head issue that was taken care of in the 2.5..................go on a ford focus sight and you will not find people calling the SPI bulletproof........you will find them raving about the Zetec......

These 2.3l are extremely well built. This os my third one. The other 2 were in pinto wagons. They had none of the computer problems i've been having here. A lot has to do with that they are cast iron no beer cans here. Iron is good!!!
