I don't know why but interested. Have a friend that also has a collapsed hose. He is going to replace his but I want to know why it collapsed.

Could just be an old hose, but also check your radiator cap and maybe replace it. Also flush the coolant system since you're taking the hoses off anyway. Deposit build up in the system can cause a collapsed hose.

Hoses collapse when a vacuum develops upon cooling and the radiator cap is jammed shut or clogged.

When the coolant heats up, it expands. This is why the system is under pressure (about 12-14psi) when it is hot. If there is too much pressure, it will vent some pressure (and coolant) out the radiator cap into the tank. As it cools, it contracts creating a vacuum. This works the cap the other way and sucks coolant back in from the tank to fill in the vacuum.

If the cap can't let coolant get sucked back in, the vacuum will collapse the hoses. Remember, if you have a vacuum, that is due to a lack of coolant volume to begin with. So you have a bad cap and low coolant.

I had the same issue, take the line that goes from the top of the radiator to the coolant reservoir and rinse it out with some high pressure water. Mine was clogged with junk and after that the hose went back to normal. It's free and easy to do.
