Default Rebuild, swap or...

How's It going guys, can't say so well for myself. First time poster here. Find myself reading threads for info, but now I have a serious issue.

I blew a head in my 1999 2.3L 4cyl auto. Before it blew, I was having issues with the drivetrain. It would start fine but When I would shift from park to reverse or drive it would lose power to the engine. My mechanic, a good friend of mine, took a look and discovered to torque converter was starting to slip.

I don't know whether to simply replace the head or to rebuild the short block all together, or do an engine swap. I currently have 184000 miles on the truck. the alternator was replaced 5000 miles ago along with all spark plugs and serpentine belt.

Looking for some advice. And the possible prices on all scenarios. My mechanic won't be back till Monday to give me his ideas. Also. I don't want to buy a new truck. A car loan is not an option, but I'm willing to sink 2000 into fixing this
