Default running veryyy rich

ok, so i am new to this ... i have a 92 ranger 2.3 cammed ported polished 19/lb inj header when i firs installed the new head and cam the truck ran great after minus random back fires and gas guzzler. and the timing is as close as can be so i drove it for the last 2 years ... but everytime i let off the gas and truck is still ingear it back fires terriably so i ordered an adjustable timing gear and hoping that does the trick i think it is out of time by like 8-10 degrees do u agree ? also when i first did this project b4 the inj my truck ran like ass unless i unplugged the o2 sensor so i have left it unplgged but i have lots of carbon and such all the time HELP
