Exclamation Identify New Cylinder Head

I am ordering a Moore's cylinder head from Auto-zone for $500. They list two heads available with the identifying difference being the size of the thermostat housing bolts. One has 6 mm threads and one has 8 mm threads. The 6 mm version also costs $50 more, but I don't know why, supply and demand perhaps.

This is for my son's 2000 Ranger 2.5L. I am ordering parts prior to dis-assembly and I don't currently have access to the vehicle. Does anyone know which version head I need to order?

Honestly, I'm going to bet you are going to have to disassemble at least one bolt off the t-stat housing and take a measurement... Either that or be prepared to order the t-stat bolts as well.

Thanks for the reply. Assuming the thread size is the only difference, if I get the wrong one I guess I'll just run out and buy new bolts. Actually Autozone just called me back; they called their suppliers for more info and discovered they can't get either one, no core inventory currently. Ugh.

I don't have a clue of any machine shops in the Bloomington/Peoria, IL area.

What exactly's wrong with your head?

I won't know what's wrong with it until I get it pulled off, but zero compression on #1 cylinder, low compression on #2 (110psi), good compression cylinders 3 & 4. Adding oil during compression test increased compression only about 10 psi, so I guess valve issues. I don't know of any machine shops in the area and don't have the time to mess around, so I figured I'd just have a new head ready to go. Also timing belt has jumped a tooth, so obviously correct that at same time.

Yeah, replace the timing belt while you have it apart;

Might want to pull a junkyard head to be honest...

Lightbulb Re: Identify New Cylinder Head

I have not located a rebuilt head yet. Gonna call around salvage to see what I can find. Can anyone tell me what years have the exact same head as mine?

2000 Ranger, 2.5L, A/C. Anything else you need to know? Thanks a bunch for your replies 94mtx.

If I remember correctly, the 2.5L only came on 2000's, so any of them should work fine for you.

I think 2.3L is the exact same head though, but wait for someone else to chime in on that one.

Then you have a 94, not a 99, and it likely has a motor swap, or you don't realize that you have a 2.3L...
