Starter? Starter Solenoid? What?
So I rebuilt the engine in my '00 2.5L Ranger and got it all back together with the help of a mechanic friend visiting from out of town. He had to go home before the final stages, so here I am for some more help...
I tried to start it the battery was too dead turn the starter even with a jump (I thought), because the interior power came on, but the starter would just click once/ key turn. I got a new battery, but still the same problem...
Where to? I thought I'd try arcing the solenoid, but I can't find it (help please). Otherwise, I guess my next step is taking the starter for testing, right?
Any other ideas?

Re: Starter? Starter Solenoid? What?
Is the engine too tight since the rebuild? Try turning the crankshaft with a wrench on the crank pulley at the front of the engine. If it turns OK then maybe a starter problem.

The solenoid is usually on the starter attached to it am I wrong? You jump it at the starter if that works then check the relay thing can't remember the name for the life of me sorry. But first make sure the battery is good.

Re: Starter? Starter Solenoid? What?
I'm helping my Son & Daughter-in-Law, by trying to get information on her '04 Ranger (2.3L). The starter appears to be going out (as it only turns over, sporadically) and they would like to know if it's changed pretty much like other starters... or does it have any specific peculiarities about it?
Thank you for your help,
Jeff

Re: Starter? Starter Solenoid? What?
Check battery connections and make sure all terminals are clean and corrosion free, if that doesn't work then I would take the starter off and have it tested. From what you say though, It does sound like the starter is bad. The solenoid is located on top of the starter which is under the engine on the passenger side, iirc. 2 bolts holding it in and 2 wires connected to solenoid.

Re: Starter? Starter Solenoid? What?
The engine turned by hand before we dropped it in the truck, but I don't remember if that was before or after putting the timing belt on. I'll try that before pulling the starter. Thanks.

If the starter is still out of the truck check the gear that engages the flywheel. Check it and the the flywheel for worn teeth or broken ones. Theres a chart you can google in the image results of google and compare the wear patterns if it is not obvious on physical gear.

Di you check the starter relay/coil?

It's possible it still doesn't have the torque to turn the engine, or that the brushes are failing. The tap with a hammer trick works because you dislodge them. You might have done that while taking it apart. you could try putting it back in to see if it works now. If it does you need it rebuilt or replaced. Since you know it responds you can also try testing the other components like connections and relay/switch.

Re: Starter? Starter Solenoid? What?
I found the problem... Loose ground under driver side of the engine. Started right up, sounded great, huge oil leak in the front. I'm thinking (hoping) oil pump O-ring. Gotta take it back apart and find out... This isn't fun anymore.

Glad you found it lol. And "having" to fix something rarely is...
